Near the end of this pivotal episode tonight the character of Elizabeth Warleggan died as a result of complications from childbirth — largely, a side-effect of what she took in order to induce labor. This is the result of a lengthy and devastating chain reaction, one that actually kickstarted back many years ago when Ross and Elizabeth slept together and she became pregnant with Valentine soon after. The mystery of Valentine’s paternity has long been a plague upon her marriage with George and while she insisted that the child was his, there was only so long that she could keep that paranoia at bay this season. All it took was one rogue comment from Geoffrey Charles for everything to escalate and the issue to become all the more contentious once more.
For Elizabeth, she viewed inducing labor and having her daughter (named Ursula) early as a way to ensure that she could get George off of her back — it would show him that many her babies happened to be premature. Yet, there was nothing about this that ended up working in the way in which she hoped.
With Reed’s character now gone from the series, what it means is that we could see the writers moving and shifting things around in a rather wide array of different directions. George, for one, could be more power-hungry and vengeful than ever now that there is nothing holding him back. Ross may be reflective, but we don’t think anything changes all that much when it comes to the feelings that he has for Demelza. He loves her and nothing about that is absolutely changing. Elizabeth is a part of his past, albeit an important and foundational part of his life.
Elsewhere in the finale…
There was some good news for Morwenna in that she and Drake are now together! More so than just that though, he understands where she’s at and is willing to help her through whatever sort of emotional devastation that she is suffering from. The series did a good job overall this season when it comes to tackling the extremely-difficult subject of Morwenna’s trauma. It’s been clear for a rather-long time that the ghosts of her past with Whitworth will not go away, but Drake seems to be patient and ready to embrace the future with her, whatever it brings.
One thing we would change
After getting so much meaty story earlier this season with Caroline and Dwight, it would have been nice to see more of that persist through the end of this season. Hopefully, there are some more great things coming for them down the road.
