When you have an opportunity to see Richard Rankin’s character back on the series, it will be clear that some time will have passed; he and Brianna will have become close, and with that in mind, he wants to do what he can to make her happy. That is why continuing to track the movements of one Jamie Fraser in history continues to be a mission of the highest priority for him. Yet, is he doing this solely for Brianna’s sake, or because he has a good bit of natural curiosity on the matter himself? In speaking on that subject to Entertainment Weekly, here is some of what Rankin had to say:

That’s going to be a bit of both for Roger, isn’t it? He’s like a dog with a bone. He’s a very passionate historian, and that’s his life. It’s not just a job for him, it excites him and discovering things, researching these things, especially parts of history which he already has an interest in, fascinates him. But there is also his love for Brianna that heightens it. There’s an unrest in Brianna that Roger wants to quell. I think that’s very much a motivation for him. One of the defining characteristics in Roger is that he can’t see anyone in any distress. He wants to do his best to fix it.

Is Roger going to be able to actually fix any problems that arise, though? Well, let’s just say that this could prove to be a pivotal plot point a little bit later on this season. We do think that Roger cares a good bit about Claire already — he’s become quite invested in her story — so that may be a personal reason for him to continue to pursue some of what he does. Yet, at the same time it would be foolish for him to fail to acknowledge the role Brianna plays in all of this. If he does have feelings that persist, he needs to act on them — luckily, we’re fairly confident that he will given that these characters have quite the epic love story of their own. We’re just still at the early stages of it given that there is so much more to come. We’re just rather happy that Sunday night’s new episode is going to further push us in that direction.
