It’s now official — for 2018, Doctor Who is going to be trading in its annual Christmas Special for one that is a celebration of New Year’s Day. This is a change that seems to be done mostly for story reasons. There have been a done of Doctor Who Christmas Specials over the years, but apparently, this time around Chris Chibnall and the rest of the team behind the scenes had a different idea. If you don’t have a great idea for a Christmas Special, we do understand the need to go in a slightly different direction. That seems to be what the show is doing by putting a special on January 1.

While doing a New Year’s Special is not a typical thing for Doctor Who, there should be a certain degree of familiarity with the idea of British TV airing on New Year’s Day. The BBC has done this before with another high-profile series in Sherlock, so why wouldn’t it work here?

There is one other sign of importance with this special: After all, Chibnall wrote this episode himself. Some of his episodes early on in season 11 were strong, but there were some other bumps in the road along the way.

The BBC America perspective

In speaking on the decision to have a New Year’s special, check out what Courtney Thomasma, executive director of BBC America, had to say on the subject:

“Jodie Whittaker and the dynamic new team have propelled Doctor Who to become TV’s fastest growing scripted series of the year. We can’t think of a better holiday gift to the fans than a week-long marathon of Doctor Who Christmas specials and fan-favorite episodes leading into 2019 with new traditions and our first-ever ‘Who Year’s Day’ special.”

From the BBC America perspective, it’s clear that they are still going to make the Christmas holiday as special as possible for longtime fans of the series. We do think that there is still a chance for some more Christmas Specials down the line — just because there is no Christmas Special now doesn’t mean that they are gone forever. We just have to imagine that the BBC will consider this again in the new year, provided of course that there are some other exciting stories to tell featuring some of these characters. It really just all comes down to the idea and whether or not there is a great one for it. If not, then it’s something that everyone involved can easily look at the following year again.
