Typically, the network has a tradition of premiering new episodes of this series on the first Monday of January — and it’s the same here, as The Bachelor will premiere on Monday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. It’s just what makes the most sense for them so that they can be done this in time in order to put on either Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, or some combination of the two starting in March. There’s a lot of story to get through with The Bachelor before that point and they gotta make sure that there’s time for all of it.
ABC definitely wants to milk this franchise for all that they can, largely due to the fact that this is one of their highest-rated shows and the idea seems to be to market heavily to Middle America with Colton as the lead. He’s a former NFL player (albeit not one you’ve probably heard of), he’s a virgin, and he’s already been on two different seasons of the show in The Bachelorette and then also Bachelor in Paradise. He wasn’t the first choice for most of Bachelor Nation (who wanted either Blake or Jason), but clearly production saw something in him that they wanted here. It just remains to be seen if that something translates into viewers and ratings.
We’re posting the synopsis below not so much when it comes to information (you probably know much of this), but instead so that you can get a sense as to how ABC is planning to market him:
Colton Underwood burst onto the scene during season 14 of “The Bachelorette.” It was his good looks, love for dogs and vulnerability that charmed not only Bachelorette Becca Kufrin, but all of Bachelor Nation. This former NFL player made a play for Becca’s heart but was sadly sent home after professing he had fallen in love. Now Colton is back and ready to capture hearts across America yet again when he returns for another shot at love.
It’s interesting that the network doesn’t even mention Bachelor in Paradise here, which is a clear sign that this isn’t something that they think plays well with all of their base. It’s equally interesting that his virginity isn’t brought up, but rest assured that is probably going to be a huge part of the season still. It’s hard for it not to be by the time we get around to the fantasy-suite portion of the season.
