The Big Bang Theory season 12 will feature Young Sheldon, Iain Armitage

The Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 2

It felt like this was bound to happen at some point before The Big Bang Theory wrapped up its run on CBS — Young Sheldon could meet adult Sheldon!

According to DeadlineIain Armitage (who plays the title character in Young Sheldon) will be joining his co-stars Lance Barber (George) and Montana Jordan (Georgie) in an upcoming episode of The Big Bang Theory season 12. The circumstances of this appearance are unclear, but it’s possible that this episode could involve adult Sheldon finding a way to reflect and look back at his past.

There’s potential for there to be a lot of fun, creative stuff that comes through this unlikely crossover, but to us, the thing that is somewhat more interesting here is seeing what happens when Sheldon actually shares a scene with his father, provided of course that happens. On The Big Bang Theory, we’ve seen Sheldon describe his late father almost as a cartoon character, someone who was basically a Neanderthal and not a whole lot other than that. Yet, on Young Sheldon we’ve seen a much more fully-formed character. Our perception on Young Sheldon is that it’s looking back on Sheldon’s childhood via a Sheldon who is much later in life, and someone who may have a different perspective on his father at that point. We know via Young Sheldon that the character does eventually become a father himself, so that could end up altering his point of view slightly on his own dad.(Who knew that we would ever be talking about three different eras of Sheldon within a single article? Also, who knew that The Big Bang Theory could start to feel like This Is Us?

Regardless of whether or not this move is a stroke of genius or a complete miss, it really doesn’t matter. It was something that felt inevitable at some point just because it’s an interesting way to get perspective (plus ratings) off of the property. Given that this is the final season of The Big Bang Theory, there’s no other real time to do this. It does seem as though Young Sheldon will probably continue. We still do advocate for the idea of a spin-off of the original show regardless of what happens with Sheldon — that’s even something we discuss in the video below! This Big Bang Theory – Young Sheldon crossover is slated to air at some point in December. Maybe this is the last one that is coming before the holiday hiatus; CBS will likely confirm things there a little bit later this month.
