What we know for the time being is that season 3 is currently in production, and is likely to be that way for the better part of many more months. The challenge with Designated Survivor is that because it was ordered far later than another series saved by Netflix in Lucifer, you’re inevitably going to be waiting a lot longer to see it come out. We project that Lucifer could be ready for release at some point in the spring … so what does that mean for Kiefer Sutherland and company?
From our vantage point, a season 3 premiere at some point in the summer of 2019 would be perfect. This would allow the series plenty of time to craft the best story possible without any rushing it along. Yet, simultaneously this would allow the series to premiere at a time in which it is relevant for it to actually do so. Many political hot topics will likely be moving into overdrive next summer, especially when you consider the fact that the latest Presidential Election will already be heating up. That may sound somewhat ridiculous to say at the moment, but we are moving more into an era where things are happening super-fast and there are elections that tend to start well over a year before the actual event happens in November.
Of course, the summer is also the perfect time to launch more episodes just because there isn’t all that much in the way of scripted television out then — at least in comparison to the network TV season. There are a handful of programs out there buy by and large but that’s more or less it. This allows the show more of a lead-up to the premiere, and hopefully a larger window of time in order to promote it. There is a lot to be excited about in the midst of this campaign, largely in that there are very few other shows that manage to find a second life somewhere after their first cancellation. It’s even more notable here since you are talking about such a timely series, and one that also just so happens to have a big-name star in Kiefer front and center.
