The first thing that is pretty genius with casting Rag Doll is that producers went out of their way in order to find someone who can actually twist and augment their body in all sorts of weird ways. Former America’s Got Talent contestant Troy James is playing this part, and the preview below makes it clear that he will be using his contortionist skills in this role. (There’s always a role in a horror movie somewhere for a guy with this particular skill set.)
As for the specific role he is going to play beyond just his abilities, it does feel as though there is some room for speculation and discussion there. Many of the meta-humans that we’ve seen so far this season haven’t had a consistent motive in the past the way that they have within the first few episodes of other seasons in the past. These are people who are in almost as much danger as The Flash and some of the other friends in his life … mostly because Cicada is still out there. His endgame is to rid the world of meta-humans and for him, it may not matter all that much if these meta-humans are good or evil. He just wants them gone, and that is something that this series can and should explore further as we inch closer to what feels like an inevitable origin-story episode coming down the line. That’s something that is both greatly needed and appreciated.
For now though, let’s just brace ourselves to enjoy Rag Doll as a character and hope that there is potential for some more chaos with him down the line if he ends up being interesting. Given that so many other Rogues on this series are now busy (actors often find other shows, after all!), it would benefit The Flash to bring up its stable of recurring foes a little bit to go alongside some of the main villains we see over the course of the year. The best seasons of this show are the ones that have that balance between enormous, super-threatening foes and ones that are a little more comedic.
