Shadowhunters and the impact of its People’s Choice Awards wins

People's Choice Awards

Tonight, the People’s Choice Awards aired on E! and by and large, it was a banner night for Shadowhunters. How else can you describe it? There were a number of wins across many major categories, whether it be the overall Show of 2018 category, Katherine McNamara, Harry Shum Jr., or Bineworthy Show. This is an incredible haul for a series that Freeform unceremoniously canceled earlier this year.

What we want to touch on in this piece, beyond of course celebrating the incredible win for the cast and crew, is if there is a larger impact that could come from this for the show. Is this actually the sort of thing that could make #SaveShadowhunters a reality?

If you read CarterMatt often, you know that we’re not into giving false hope on anything — that’s why we don’t just want to say that there’s a chance at something just for the sake of doing so. Yet, if anything is going to make a possible network or streaming service other than Freeform take note of something, it is this. There were millions of votes cast all over the world to give this series recognition, and it got them awards across SEVERAL major categories against some really heavy hitters. This shows that the passion is there for so much more of this series and it really comes down to finding someone willing to be the knight in shining armor for the show.

There is no tangible evidence that winning People’s Choice Awards necessarily means anything when it comes to a show’s ratings. That’s the bad news here. Yet, it does bring a great deal more attention to the cause and allows executives to realize that this is an audience that (clearly) is not going anywhere in the near future. It’s been one of the most passionate, organized save-our-show campaigns of all time and in the aftermath of this, we have to think that the movement will have even more excitement behind it than ever. The downside is just that, insofar as we know right now, production house Constantin Film has moved forward and has no more plans to shop the show around.

Basically, what we have to hope for is that some brave network or service will have seen the PCAs tonight and start making some phone calls.

No matter what happens, remember that there’s nothing that can take this win away from the fandom. This is extraordinary, and it shows that no matter what the future holds, this is a show that will live on in countless hearts and minds.
