Saturday Night Live: Lil Wayne performs ‘Can’t Be Broken’ with Halsey

Saturday Night Live review

Tonight, Lil Wayne is the musical guest for Saturday Night Liveand we certainly had expectations for it to be an electric performance. While we are not too familiar with his music, we do recognize him as one of the most unique and innovative performers out there.

Let’s kick things off with Wayne’s first performance tonight in “Can’t Be Broken” — an emotional performance that did show some of his evolution as a performer. He’s not the same rapper that he was years ago. He’s now trying to do things a little bit different. This song melodically was pretty incredible and it had a good hook; yet, at the same time we do wish that there was some amplification on Wayne’s voice; one of the biggest issues we had with this was that it was hard to hear him sometimes over the beat and the background. We couldn’t hear that he was rapping about some meaningful, interesting stuff; it just would have been nice to have it amplified.

For those wondering, the female vocalist for the chorus was Halsey, someone who absolutely has a loyal following in her own right. This was a collaboration that worked, and the end result overall was a successful performance despite the technical issues during the Lil Wayne part of it.

Second Song – “Uproar”

For the next performance, Wayne brought out another collaborator in Swizz Beats in order to take on “Uproar.” This song was backed by a ton of dangers — we’re not entirely sure what they were doing for the majority of it, but we do think that the rollicking beat here made this a fun one to watch. Also, Wayne’s coat was certainly fascinating and different in itself.

Given that there aren’t a lot of performances on TV for Lil Wayne these days, we appreciate just about any opportunity that we get in order to see him. That was the big takeaway from the performances tonight almost than anything else. This felt like a genuine event and something that you don’t actually see all that often. Perhaps that made it special even more so than the individual performances did.
