Last Man Standing season 7 ratings rise; Hawaii Five-0 falls for 200th episode

Hawaii Five-0

The latest Friday ratings are in, and we’ve realized an interesting correlation here — having a milestone episode doesn’t guarantee that more viewers are going to watch in the slightest.

For evidence of that, just take a look at how Hawaii Five-0 season 9 last night slipped to a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic — even though it was the 200th episode of the series. That’s still a solid number for Fridays, but obviously it would’ve been nice to see it inch up in a slightly-more-positive direction. (For those wondering, MacGyver drew a 0.7 rating on the night while Blue Bloods generated a 0.8 rating in full. These three shows continue to generate a super-formidable lineup for CBS.)

As for the top-rated series of the night in the demo, that title goes to Last Man Standing yet again — and it’s really not even close. Friday’s episode posted in full a 1.3 rating, a nice increase versus the week prior. The Tim Allen sitcom seems to be leveling off around the 1.1-1.3 range in the demo for most new episodes, which is a rather-nice total and one that should keep it on the air for a good stretch of time moving forward.

The most impressive thing for Last Man Standing is that it’s actually breaking the mold in a big way — its average ratings are up from what they were in season 6 on ABC. Given that this is a series that was off the air for more than a year, that makes the gain all the more impressive. It’s so rare that we end up seeing shows improve or even stay steady in an era where viewers can just set their DVR and watch later. There are even some people out there these days who stand on principle and refuse to watch anything unless they can skip the commercials.

As for other ratings…

Blindspot over on NBC did actually improve to a 0.5 rating, which may give fans a little bit more hope for its future. As for Midnight, Texas, however, we don’t think that a 0.4 rating will end up cutting it there. It doesn’t have the build-in fandom or the hefty international audience that Blindspot has … at least at the moment.

Meanwhile, don’t be shocked if Fox issues an early season 2 renewal for The Cool Kids (1.0). It’s capitalizing on its lead-in tremendously and has become the hit that the folks over at Fox really hoped that it could be.
