Magnum PI season 2: What are current renewal odds? (Progress Report)

As we look towards where we are in Magnum PI at the moment, coupled with where we could be down the road this season, it’s never too early to start thinking about the future. This is a show that, depending on if the ratings stay steady, could be anything from an easy decision by CBS to a possible bubble show.

As we just referenced, the fact that Magnum PI did get a full season (think 20 episodes in this case) is a hopeful sign for its long-term future on the air. CBS clearly believes in it enough to keep it around for a little while. However, it also is still a show that is generating less than a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. While this can be said for two of Peter M. Lenkov’s other series at the moment in Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver, these are also shows airing on Friday nights. they don’t have the same expectations put upon them. Magnum has some tough competition, though, as it is battling 911, Dancing with the Stars, and The Voice regularly in its timeslot. There’s a reason why CBS has struggled with this time for a while.

If there is a big reason for renewal here, it is more than likely just the idea that giving this show more episodes and more time will lead to better results. We think that MacGyver really figured itself out as a series about halfway through its first-season run, and for many other crime series, it can take even more. Magnum PI has had some great episodes, but also some that are a little more forgettable — as any new show would. We do think it’s getting better every week, though, and heading in the right direction.

What are the current renewal odds?

We’re fairly confident, largely due to the producing prestige that exists behind the show and then also the potential here for year-to-year stability, just because Magnum PI is fairly procedural at heart. Most of the people who are watching now may be people that Lenkov and the rest of the team should be able to keep down the road, provided that they develop and hone in on these characters in the way in which they should.

As for when you could know about a renewal for Magnum PI, be prepared to wait a while — it could be as early as March or as late as May, depending on the ratings and also how CBS wants to do things this year. Typically, they issue a bulk renewal for most of their shows come March or April.
