MacGyver season 3 episode 7 sneak peek: Matty’s Dragonfly mission

One of the best things about MacGyver sometimes is that the series is oddly educational! You never quite know what you’re going to learn in a given episode and in the sneak peek below, we apparently learn that there are an inordinate amount of tech graveyards halfway around the world. This is where old computers go to die, and sometimes these old computers have valuable information on them that, in the wrong hands, could be exposed and devastate governments. Is there something like that buried on the one that the Phoenix Foundation is looking for? It certainly seems that way.
For starters, there is a covertness to this mission that is very fascinating. Matty sends the team over to look for a hard drive that may contain information that is being used to blackmail a United States Senator (think along the lines of an extramarital affair). However, the blackmailer with the drive apparently doesn’t realize (at least just yet) that this computer also contains something even more important: A file labeled Dragonfly. The contents of this particular file are apparently deeply personal to Meredith Eaton’s character — she doesn’t want to talk about its contents, but she also makes it clear that getting it back is of the utmost concern. She is so concerned in fact, that she has the team flying out to Ghana commercially in order to retrieve it. When Jack objects, she fires back a shocking one-word response to him: “Please.” Jack realizes in this moment that there is something about this file that matters to Matty so much more than he first realized — she’s actually showing fear, and if you know Matilda Webber, then you know already that this is not a character who routinely shows fear. She’s as tough and stoic as they come.
All of the events of this sneak peek lay the foundation for what could be one of the series’ most-beautiful episodes, one that offers up a chance to actually dive deep and get to understand more who Matty Webber is and what things matter to her. Maybe she’ll grow a little bit closer to the rest of the Phoenix team in the process — not that there’s this much distance between them now. They already care about each other. There’s just also a boss dynamic that makes communication a little different than it would be otherwise.
