In a new post on Twitter, cast member John Bell (who plays Young Ian Murray) makes it clear that he recently did some ADR work for the final episode — you know, the one that many of the cast have hyped up as one of the biggest episodes in the show’s history! For those who don’t know TV jargon all that well, ADR work is basically when actors go in and record /re-record dialogue that they weren’t able to properly get out on set. Sometimes this dialogue is for a character who was off-screen for a scene, or maybe it wasn’t caught properly due to filming conditions or small changes after the fact. There are a ton of different reasons to do it and it often happens. It’s just another way to make things perfect — which viewers more or less expect with a show this good.
An interesting perspective on this is as follows: While the easy assumption for many to make is that cast has many months off in between the end of filming one season and the start of another to indulge in a much needed break or even other projects it doesn’t always shake out that way. There’s this ADR work that needs to be done, and then there is also the publicity commitments that go along with doing a show like this. Oftentimes, you find yourself in a spot where you need to go and talk about Outlander even when you’re not filming; that’s why a TV actor’s work is sometimes never done!
Of course, there are some breaks interspersed through all of this work and there will continue to be from now until February, which is when season 5 is going to begin production in Scotland. At the moment though, there are many details that are heavily under-wraps about what producers are planning to do there. The idea is to stick to the books (our cousin is on the Outlander writing staff), but there is no casting information out there or scoop about filming. It’s really just far too early for the series to start to give those details away — heck, they may not do so in February, either.
When could the Outlander finale air?
Much of that depends on Starz and their plans for the holiday season. They haven’t announced yet whether or not they intend to air Outlander across Christmas and New Year’s Day, and that’s a two-week variable that could make the finale date fluctuate. If it were us, we’d fight to make sure the finale wasn’t opposite the Super Bowl … even though we realize that live ratings don’t matter all that much.
