NBC not putting Chicago Med season 4 on hiatus, after all; reverses course

For anyone out there who has been worried about Chicago Med season 4 being put on ice for some of the colder months out of the year, don’t be.

Today, NBC officially decided to reverse course on their plan to separate the One Chicago shows from each other in January, which makes some sense given that the lineup has likely surpassed even some of their own expectations. They’ve been some of the most-consistent and most-watched shows of the night for the first seven Wednesdays of the season and really, there’s no reason to want to deviate from that. Originally, NBC was planning to air The Titan Games in the Chicago Med timeslot — they’ve since shifted it over to Thursday nights starting on January 3.

Going into the season, we had some fear that putting Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD on the same night would lead to some potential over-saturation of the market; yet, that hasn’t happened and instead, it feels like One Chicago viewers are embracing them more than ever. Renewal prospects are promising for all three shows, and we say that even more than we did at this point last year. Remember how nervous everyone was that Chicago Med had a late premiere last fall due to Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders getting the earlier premiere? That seems almost like a distant memory now.

We don’t want to get too far ahead or ourselves here, mostly because there are still some great stories coming up this fall for all three shows. With Chicago Med in particular, the obvious thing that needs to be addressed here is the status of Will Halstead’s relationship with Natalie Manning in the wake of the ever-expanding secret about the Ray operation. You gotta think that this is going to come out at some point … right? Meanwhile, you also have some changing relationships elsewhere: It seems like Connor Rhodes and Ava Bekker are closer to being together than they’ve been in some time after she pretty much risked her life to save a patient. Meanwhile, Ethan Choi’s history with Vicky Glass seems to be a thing of the present now rather than a thing of the past. She turned up at the end of this past episode and what that means for their future — and also the future of Ethan and April — is still very much to be determined.

We’ll see if there is a Manstead wedding coming later this year, in addition to a lot of the other exciting stuff that defines this show including fascinating cases and of course crossovers. There are no major ones planned in the near future, but there’s always a chance for a little bit of cross-show pollination sprinkled in through the season.
