The sneak preview below comes courtesy of TVLine, and the main discussion point here is something that we’ve heard about already: Claire’s view on slavery and how she finds it immoral. Claire, of course, is entering the 18th century with a modern-day perspective, one that understands the horrors of slavery in a way that either Jocasta doesn’t understand or doesn’t want to understand. There is a key distinction there, given that Jocasta has not lived the entirety of her lives with slaves, and therefore may have the innate perception that this is just a natural part of life. Beyond just this, it’s not as though all of 18th-century America is completely driven by slavery — just look at some of the Quakers and some other people in the north! This is something Claire cites as a part of her life experience when trying to show a different way of thinking and living. It’s smart in that she needs to have a cover story as to why she feels the way that she does regarding slavery and doing healing around the Quakers is as reasonable a way to go about this as possible.

Jocasta’s response to all of this seems to just be “well, I’ve heard that you were like this,” which really just feels like the 18th-century way of giving a backhanded compliment. She doesn’t seem to be altogether interested in hearing Claire out on her views or changing her ways at River Run. This is her plantation and with that, she may choose to run it however she wants regardless of how Claire feels about it.

Yet, it is hard to imagine that this conversation is the end of the conflict between the two. Perhaps over time, Caitriona Balfe and Maria Doyle Kennedy’s characters can come to more of a proper understanding, but it’s going to be rather difficult unless Jocasta makes some effort to change. We know many things about Claire, from her tremendous heart to her undying love for Jamie and one of the other things we know is that she’s not so willing to change her mind on a subject she strongly believes in. Understanding the cruelty of slavery is pretty high up on the list and this is not a subject in which she will break on — maybe Jocasta does not fully realize that just yet, but it will hit her the more that she spends time with her.

So where does Jamie land in all of this? That’s what Sunday night’s new episode will unveil further.
