American Horror Story: Apocalypse finale spoilers: ‘Apocalypse Then’

Sarah Paulson

Next week on the American Horror Story: Apocalypse finale, it’s more or less the end of the world as we know it.

We don’t know how much higher the stakes can be than a nuclear holocaust and the perceived destruction of all humankind, but that’s where we are entering this particular hour. It feels clear that there’s a good chance of death by the end of this … but then there’s also the key question as to whether or not death is actually going to matter. Given how many characters seemed to have come back from the dead and all of the other bizarre ins and outs of this franchise, they’ve painted themselves into a fairly fascinating place now. They’ve made it so that everything and nothing matters … but still, there’s some element of terror in what Michael is going to do next.

Also, there remains the same primary question that we wondered going into tonight’s episode: How in the world do you wrap all of this craziness up in the amount of time that there is left? Do you need to have an apocalypse after the apocalypse to break some of this down? Is there going to be enough closure … or is it kind of the point that you don’t have all that much closure? All worthy discussions in their own weird, confusing way. We certainly do think that it matters that this season has a great finale, mostly because we feel like there’s somewhat of a mixed history when it comes to this series at large. Even if there is no firm conclusion when it comes to the story, there has to be something to cling to thematically. What does this story really mean in retrospect, other than of course how cool it was to see some of our favorite characters again? This finale marks a chance to really tie everything up … even if it is not tied together neatly.

Regardless of whatever happens at the end of this season story-wise, one thing can be assured: This is the year of Cody Fern. He is, by far, the breakout star of American Horror Story: Apocalypse. He’s dominated many of the scenes that he’s been in and has electrified with his presence. Sure, he’s playing one of the most horrendous characters possible, but let’s not sit here and pretend that this is the first time that we’ve seen anything like this happen where a villain somehow dominates in terms of attention. Remember Finn Wittrock during American Horror Story: Freak Show?
