Empire season 5 episode 7 preview: What’s the big secret?

Empire season 4 episode 1

Empire season 5 episode 7, which is coming to Fox on November 14, feels kinda old-school in a way. It’s an episode with a ton of different storylines, insane family drama, and a fairly-famous music artist coming on board as a fictional character. We’ve always been fascinated about how the producers get people to come on board here and play different musicians than who they actually are in life.

This time around, we’re talking Joss Stone! She’s a fantastic singer and here, she’s going to be at the center of (you guessed it) some Lyon family drama! Cookie is the sort of person who is so hyper-ambitious that she wouldn’t even mind snatching one of Jamal’s own artists away from him. This is where Stone comes into play as that artist.

For some more, CarterMatt has the Empire season 5 episode 7 synopsis for you to check out below:

In an effort to bridge the gap between Lyon Family Management and Empire, Lucious must play nice with Jeff Kingsley, so that the two companies can get girl group TBD back on the map. Meanwhile, Jamal grows frustrated with Cookie when she tries to steal his London artist, Wynter (guest star Joss Stone), out from under him, Andre works with the mother of one of his old inmates to help free her innocent son and Cookie realizes her sister is in danger in the all-new “Treasons, Stratagems, and Spoils” episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, Nov. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (EMP-507) (TV-14 D, L, S, V)

While the Lucious storyline may not have the “OMG guest star” factor of what Cookie’s doing, it is still fundamental for what the Empire story is at the moment: Watching the Lyon family try to pick themselves up and dust off the residue of failure and defeat. They’re the underdogs now and Empire is Goliath pointing and laughing at them from the mountaintop; yet, Lucious knows that he has to work with them from time to time. Maybe he’s setting them up with the musical version of a Trojan horse, or maybe he cares about TBD just as much as he does his own rise to prominence. What we really want to see is Lucious lay the smackdown on his own company — the guy may not always be likable but he’s always compelling to watch.

Amazingly, we’ve went this far without even mentioning directly that Vivica A. Fox is in this episode. What’s wrong with us? We may not be seeing as many notable names drop in on Empire like when the show was in its heyday, but it’s still clearly a hot spot and a way to draw some pretty good attention and Fox is a really solid get!

The promo below, to go along with all of this, asks another question: What’s the big secret?
