Outlander season 4 episode 2 photos: The next Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe story

Outlander season 4 photos

Today, we’re embarking on what is a two-part Outlander photo preview voyage as we look ahead towards season 4 episode 2. This episode is essential in so many ways since it’s about recovery for Jamie and Claire, a meeting with Aunt Jocasta, and also the role of slavery within the 18th century. Without even any confirmation of a Roger or Bree appearance, it does feel like there’s a great deal of notable content ahead.

It feels appropriate to kick things off with the new image above, largely because it feels so aesthetically similar to where some of our favorite characters were at the end of the premiere. While Caitriona Balfe’s character is likely still reeling from the attack at the hands of Stephen Bonnet and his men, she’s trying to move forward and we have to assume that Jamie is doing the same. They had already made the choice to remain in America and to pay Jamie’s aunt a visit; yet, the circumstances are different without the ruby in their possession. It’s less about possessing wealth or authority and now they now have to find a way to make due.

Alas, we do imagine that finding a way with Jocasta will be so much easier said than done.

Outlander season 4

One of the primary reasons for tension is going to come in the form of slavery. Here, you can get the first echo of that seeing Colin McFarlane as Ulysses, a man who works within the house and has a relationship with Jocasta that can be described as certainly unique. (That’s without giving away any spoilers for the select few of you who have not read Drums of Autumn.) The circumstances of Ulysses life are certainly different than many other black men and women at River Run; the parameters of his enslavement are complicated and based on circumstances and location. Yet, beyond him there are many slaves at the plantation that fit more of the traditional definition from history. This is something that Claire will not appreciate, being the well-informed and morally sensible woman that she is.

While it may be true that slavery was a more common practice in the 18th-century south, it still does, at least through the modern lens, feel difficult to accept the notion that every plantation owner felt as though slavery was just “okay.” It was a way to preserve wealth and institute power.

Outlander season 4 episode 2

For Jamie, Sam Heughan’s character finds himself in a precarious position. He and Claire will always be a team, and he is not someone who has spent the better part of his life with slaves. We have to believe that he understands the horrific morality of the act; with that said, he may also recognize that a path to his future could be found through Jocasta and the small family that he has in America. He may have to find a way to delicately thread a needle at River Run, while also taking on some emerging and most-surprising threats.
