Last Week Tonight with John Oliver revisits family separation, immigration

Last Week Tonight

For his last main segment on Last Week Tonight leading up to the midterm elections, John Oliver chose to focus on immigration. To be specific, he put the lens on the family separation policy that drew headlines many years ago. This may be one of the most controversial policies of the entire Trump Administration, and it hasn’t really gone away … even if you haven’t heard a lot about it over time.

Basically, the top point of this segment was that the family separation policy is still going on, and there are still a number of terrible stories that are out there about it. That includes stories about missing children, anti-caravan political ads, and also misrepresentation of various statistics.

In the aftermath, what we wonder about with this segment is rather simple: How much did we really learn? It’s been clear for some time that there is an anti-immigration sentiment out there, and while this segment contained some rather shocking facts and discussion points, they still won’t change many minds that are out there. We’re in an era now where everyone is so divided and nobody seems to be thinking about listening to other arguments.

Of course, the most heartbreaking part of this entire segment was seeing the video of the young child who was devastated and shattered after such a long separation — even to the point where the boy did not want to even call his mom by that name anymore. For a brief moment, it seemed as though Oliver was about to tear up telling this particular story. He has no problem making the midterm election about immigration, mostly because Trump decided to do that first.

Next week … it’s the first show after the midterms, and we imagine that the subject matter is going to shift and turn around in a rather interesting way.
