The Walking Dead season 9: Why no Chandler Riggs cameo in Rick Grimes’ exit?

Chandler Riggs

There were a number of big cameos and interesting moments in Sunday’s The Walking Dead episode. Yet, there is also one extremely-glaring omission. Where in the world was Chandler Riggs?

At the moment, there is no official moment from Riggs himself about the no-show, but to us, this was the most bizarre of the omissions — whether it was a creative choice or Chandler just wasn’t available. One of the strangest decisions of the entire episode was bringing on board a rather-polarizing guy like Shane, but at the same time removing someone like Riggs altogether from the equation who was on the show significantly longer and was actually Rick’s son. The lack of Sarah Wayne Callies as Lori was also disappointing, but a little more understandable given that she hasn’t been on the series in ages.

To us, Carl was a hugely important part of The Walking Dead as a series. As a matter of fact, he was the heart and soul of the group — the beating heart, if you will. It’s really hard to imagine the series existing still without him as a part of it. Losing him was just as important as losing Rick, and we do think it would have been nice to have him back. Rick had worked hard to create a replication of Carl’s dream for the world; this would have been an opportunity for a pat on the back and for Rick to have some sort of peace.

Here is what Lincoln had to say on the subject after the fact:

“It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning. And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition … Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story.”
