The Walking Dead season 9: How did Rick Grimes die … if he is dead?

Tonight, The Walking Dead season 9 had a rather enormous responsibility: Trying to properly establish Rick Grimes’ fond farewell.

Yet, how did Rick, and Andrew Lincoln, say goodbye — was he actually killed off, or did he decide instead to fade off in the distance somewhere? This is what this episode had to figure out how to establish. Our feeling going into it was that Rick was going to die, mostly because of A) what happened at the end of last week with the rebar and B) all of the walkers that were around him.

Throughout the episode, we saw the return of many familiar faces, whether it be Jon Bernthal, Sonequa Martin Green, or even the late and great Scott Wilson as Hershel. All of these characters served a purpose as we were able to better say goodbye.

After being separate from the team for most of the episode, the closing minutes gave us a chance in order to see Rick reunite with his friends … but only before he ended up exploding a bridge full of walkers with him on it. Is he actually dead? Well, that’s a point of good controversy right now. If we had to argue it, we’d say that he may (technically) still be somewhere out there … but we don’t have to argue it, since Jadis eventually found him and he flew off somewhere in a helicopter. Is this the end of the road for him? That’s something that we are going to have to figure out now over time.

So with that, Rick is still out there … somewhere. Clearly, this represents AMC wanted to keep its options open.
