Saturday Night Live cold open: Kate McKinnon’s Laura Ingraham talks migrant caravan

SNL

Going into this weekend’s Saturday Night Liveit was inevitable that there was going to be a political cold open. How could there not be, all things considered? It’s the weekend before the midterms and just about everyone in the cast likely wanted to do something slanted in that direction. It also felt like an Alec Baldwin return as Donald Trump was possible — though granted, him getting arrested earlier this week threw a wrench into that possibility.

So what did SNL end up eventually decide to do? Rather than going to Trump, they busted out Kate McKinnon as Laura Ingraham — host of The Ingraham Angle on Fox News. Basically, the entire sketch was a spoof on Fox News and many of their personalities. The main subject? Think along the lines of the migrant caravan and what they are set to do to the United States … a good bit down the road. This entire cold open was full of fake facts and ridiculous clips. At one point, the sketch played clips from a Brad Pitt movie and also a Walmart presumably on Black Friday.

Was this the most effective cold open in the world? Not necessarily. There were some funny moments, including Kenan Thompson as Sheriff Clarke claiming that the caravan was coming over to vote. The entire sketch was satire about fear-mongering, voter suppression, and everything that Fox News is broadcasting leading up to the election. The only issue is that there wasn’t really anything in here that we haven’t seen already. We will say that McKinnon is great as Ingraham and that does go a long way — the same thing goes for the fake sponsors.
