This week, NBC confirmed that Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber is going to be hosting the November 10 edition of the show — it’s certainly a gig that we did not imagine for the actor at this time, especially since it is a different sort of gig than the one that he has on the Showtime drama. We certainly do think that Ray Donovan is the sort of series that is perfect for parody, but we do wonder about the choice of a non-comedian to come on immediately after the midterms. It feels like this could have been a great opportunity for someone with a little more stand-up background to come on to spoof the results of the election. This is certainly something that SNL did with regularity back after the Presidential Election in the 2016-17 season.
As for the musical guest, we consider this one to be even more surprising: Lil Wayne. He is one of the greatest hip-hop artists of the past couple of decades, but he’s also become a little more enigmatic over the years. It’s a great get for NBC to nail him down for an appearance here, especially since we don’t have a great sense as to the specific music he’s going to want to perform for the show just yet.
There is one more episode of SNL set for November 17, but there is no confirmed host or musical guest just yet. Given that this is the annual Thanksgiving episode, we’d love for it to be someone like a former cast member — or at least a host who has a significant amount of experience working with the show. This tends to make for a lighter, funnier product as a whole.
