Alone Together canceled at Freeform; no season 3 coming

Alone Together

There is certainly some news out there tonight when it comes to Freeform’s Alone Together … but we can’t call it good news.

Sources confirm today that the platonic-relationship comedy has been officially canceled after two seasons; while we wish that we could say that any of this news was a surprise, it’s really not. The ratings for the series were far from stellar through most of its two-season run; despite some positive reception, it could never really get going. Alas, it didn’t have any big names and, beyond that, was not tied to a larger franchise. The reason why we do bring some of this up here is mostly because it’s very hard for a show to really succeed in the modern era without much groundwork or an easier way to appeal to viewers. There are just SO many options out there.

Of course, you can also add to this that Freeform does have a history of canceling many series fairly early on in their run. Take, for example, what’s transpired with Shadowhunters or Young & Hungry — the latter didn’t even get a formal wrap-up movie. Even back in the network’s days as ABC Family, they had a habit of ending shows before people were ready to see it happen. Just take a look at what happened with Make It or Break It or Bunheads — we’re still not over Bunheads, even though we realize that it’s been many years since that cancellation happened.

As much as we do have a history ourselves at wagging our finger over Freeform cancellations, we also do need to be honest here — this is a show that was barely even averaging a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic. It’s hard to really fault the network here when this rating is so low that it’s hard to imagine that any network out there would have kept it around. It may have been better off starting on a streaming platform or somewhere else where it can find an audience.
