Instead, what we saw tonight was effectively a case of footage being imposed in from the past, on most occasions, rather than everyone coming back for another appearance. Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, here is what executive producer Krista Vernoff had to say on the subject:
When an actor leaves the show there is paperwork put into place that allows us to use clips. We have some iconic footage that the fans will immediately recognize: That shot of Derek, the fans who have watched the show multiple times know what episode that is from. There are iconic moments and shots that we pulled from moments that actually never aired on the show — like Mark with Derek — and then there’s newly shot stuff with Ellis and Doc the dog.
So basically, Grey’s Anatomy used the magic of computers and editing in order to ensure that they could get a lot of the scenes together they they really wanted. We don’t really think that there was any need to actually bring the actors back for what Vernoff and the producers wanted to do here — a big thing to remember is that their appearances have changed over the years; they are to be remembered in the way that they were prior to their death, and that further aided the decision that producers made tonight insofar as editing goes.
