Saturday Night Live promo: Introducing Jonah Hill (in robot form)

The first promo for this weekend’s new Saturday Night Live with Jonah Hill has surfaced, and it is (in a word) weird. It’s so weird that it only seems perfect that Kyle Mooney is in the sketch with him, since this feels like one of the odd pre-tape sketches from Kyle that you tend to see in one of the shows.

The idea of this promo is simple enough: Jonah calls Kyle to make it clear that he is not going to be able to host this weekend’s edition of the series. With that in mind, Kyle brings a robot version of the actor out in order to ensure that there is a proper host, even if apparently, all Robot Jonah Hill can actually do is print out receipts. Somehow, this is worth a laugh or two … though it’s probably not something you could watch more than a few times without eventually rolling your eyes. The best thing about this is just that Jonah was game enough to do it, though that shouldn’t be a huge shock to anyone out there. He’s done this stuff so many times over the years and has always been game for it. (Remember that one of his signature characters is a kid named Adam Grossman who he has played a number of times over the years.)

We’ll have more in terms specific expectations for this episode over the years, but for now, let’s just say that this is a show with a lot of ambition. Jonah’s shows to date have been somewhat hit-or-miss, but hopefully this is one that is going to end up working.
