Game of Thrones prequel casts Poldark actor as male lead

Game of Thrones

The upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series already announced Naomi Watts as its female lead; now, Josh Whitehouse is also on board.

According to a new report coming in via Deadline, the Poldark actor (he played Hugh Armitage through seasons 3 and 4 of the series) is set to be an important part of the series … but there is not a whole lot of information out there about the role at the moment. HBO is keeping things under a heavy lock and key for the new series, not that this should be all that much of a surprise to anyone. This is a series that is still a really long ways away from premiering, after all! The final season of Game of Thrones proper is going to be airing at some point in the first half of 2019; it’s fair to say that the prequel will not be on the air until 2020.

Given the sudden ferocity of casting news when it comes to the prequel series, we imagine that there is going to be some other news when it comes to casting in the near future. Given that this is a series set many years in the past, we have a really hard time thinking that there will be any holdovers with the original cast. We’re almost certainly looking at a new slate, and a rather large collection of them at the same time. The original Game of Thrones has relied on a rather large array of notable names over the past several years, and that makes sense when you are dealing with a world as vast as Westeros.

As for whether or not a prequel will be successful, it remains too early to tell. Yet, we do think that it is a given that HBO would want to do it given the ratings success of the original show.
