Dancing with the Stars 27 elimination: Mary Lou Retton says goodbye

Granted, he’s been that way for the vast majority of the season — he’s consistently had scores that were lower than just about anyone else. He’s been kept on the show mostly because of his solid fanbase, which comes via the passionate Bachelor Nation. They’re some of the most-supportive people out there, and it helps that Joe comes across as a really nice guy — even if he’s not the greatest dancer in the known world.
Sooner or later, we knew entering tonight that it would be Joe’s time to go eventually. We just had to wait and see if this was it.
Well, this wasn’t it
Instead, Mary Lou Retton ended up leaving the competition, which makes this another surprising exit among many this season. She did fairly well in the scores, and typically there is a good pattern of Olympians being able to come on and perform rather well. Her issue here is, rather simply, that she didn’t have enough fans backing her up. In terms of the scores alone, she was in the middle of the pack. You could easily make a case for her sticking around until at least the middle of next month, but sometimes this show just throws you for a loop.
As for Joe, he gets to buy his time for at least one more week. We’ll see what happens to him on the other side with another week of voting.
