In leading off this discussion, let’s start things off by sharing here the official Outlander season 4 episode 1 synopsis below:
Claire and Jamie cross paths with Stephen Bonnet, a pirate and smuggler who enlists their help. Claire illuminates Jamie on some of America’s history, leading him to wonder if it’s possible for them to lay down roots.
This makes it clear that Outlander is going to waste little to no time introducing one of its most controversial characters: Bonnet, someone who will have a large role as the season goes along. Everything that happens over this season with Bonnet could be traced back to what happens during the premiere, so we do wonder precisely how the writers are going to impact this situation emotionally. It’s not going to be easy thing to grapple with.
As for the history element of the premiere, Claire knows about slavery, what happens to Native Americans, and a number of different atrocities that have taken place within America in the 18th century. While she lives in America in the 20th century and is able to deal with the baggage of the country’s past, it is inevitably easier when you don’t see it staring you right in the face. On season 4, it’s going to be almost impossible for Claire to avoid what happened there, and she is going to have some strong opinions about it.
There are of course some other issues here, as well, when it comes to starting a home — just think in terms of finding the right place, and then fending off any threats that come their way. While it’s a different sort of drama coming up this season, there is definitely still some drama nonetheless.
