Madam Secretary season 5 episode 4 tackles World War II deaths
When it comes to the story of Elizabeth McCord, she had to tackle first military wartime deaths and making sure families got their bodies after their deaths overseas after they were recently identified. (They stemmed all the way back from the second World War.) This was a story that went viral, with many decrying the Dalton Administration for their politics and for not getting the bodies back sooner.
Of course, Elizabeth did just about everything that she can in order to ensure that she could resolve the issue, including speaking with foreign dignitaries and trying to figure out the right way in which to move forward. This also meant her having to meet with the families of the deceased, including an angry daughter of a soldier who went AWOL; because of that, he did not get a proper military funeral. She didn’t want to wrestle with that legacy but thanks to Secretary McCord, she didn’t have to.
One of the problems for the entire family, though, was that much of this stemmed over to what was going on with Henry. As it turns out, one of the family’s favorite eating establishments didn’t want to welcome him anymore because of Dalton’s policies. This is a part of politics these days; restaurants don’t want to serve people if they don’t agree with them politically.
Perhaps the most dramatic scene actually came at the end of the episode, though, when Elizabeth learned that her daughter Alison was not planning on voting just because she was upset over the candidate she was helping choosing to bail on an initiative. Yet, she changed her mind in order to go to a polling place. We do think that this was an important story to touch on right before the midterms, all about the merits of voting and supporting your favorite candidates.
