At the moment, we’re cautiously optimistic over the future of the series — provided that it is something that the cast really wants. Getting an extra episode from ABC is a sign that the network has a great deal of faith in this particular cast, and also their ability to be a consistent, reliable presence for years to come. It’s not just about bringing a show like The Conners back; instead, it’s also just as much about having a show that manages to lift other shows on the lineup. One of the biggest strengths with a series like this is that it can make hits out of other programs. We at least have a chance to see The Kids Are Alright get a full-season order on the strength of what is airing before it.

So long as The Conners continues to retain around 80% of its ratings momentum the rest of the season, we’ll feel confident that there will be another season coming. As for whether or not the cast will want back on board, that’s where the question marks are. The benefit of The Conners is that the pay is great and the schedule isn’t extremely demanding; yet, there’s a chance that after doing Roseanne for so many years plus also everything that happened this past summer, maybe everyone wants to move on. The Conners this year is a slightly different scenario, given that most of the cast was already signed on to do another year of the show before Roseanne Barr was fired.
