Legacies season 1 debate: Should Candice King return as Caroline?
As a matter of fact, Caroline has a better reason to come on Legacies than virtually any other former Vampire Diaries character who is not already in the cast — she’s got tangible connections to Hope due to Klaus, she helps to run the Salvatore School, and she is also responsible for helping to raise Josie and Lizzie. All of that suggests that Caroline is perfect for the show … but there are still no plans for her to return.

What gives with that? It may have to do, in part, with finding the right story; beyond that, it’s also certainly possible that this show is trying to do its own thing right now. King may also just want a break to do different things after playing Caroline for eight years. She was more consistently a part of The Vampire Diaries than Matthew Davis was, and she also made a number of appearances on The Originals. While more than a decade may have passed between the end of The Vampire Diaries and the start of Legacies, it hasn’t been anywhere near that long for the actors.
If this series lasts long enough, or at least goes past its initial episode order, we do think that there is a chance for more Caroline then. For now, though, we’re not banking on anything. Do we want to see what her life is like now? Definitely, just as we also want to see her alongside Josie and Lizzie. We just have to be pretty patient here while the series spends some of its time establishing its new world.
