There are a million reasons to love this news about A Million Little Things — at least if you are watching it.

Today, ABC opted to give the drama series, starring James Roday and Giuntoli, four additional episodes for a “full” season order of 17. It’s a little more common these days for series to have a slightly-smaller episode order than 22 — a good example of this is Manifest getting an extra three episodes, bringing its full order to 16. Magnum PI over on CBS has an order over 20 episodes, and that solidifies further is that it’s fairly standard for different shows to operate using a wide array of different episode counts.

As a whole, our feeling at the moment is that this is a show that is going to remain on the bubble for most of the year — while we consider the full season an endorsement, its ratings are not so spectacular that anything beyond just this is a given. This is a series that does need a little bit more buzz and attention if it really wants to ensure that it gets a season 2. It has been described in some ways as the ABC version of This Is Us — one with a sentimental story and great characters at the center of it. We do love the cast, and also the potential that it has if it has a chance to really explore it central themes for a long period of time. It just needs a network who believes in it, and for now, it does appear as though it has that.

We’ll see more about the future of A Million Little Things when networks make their decisions in the spring — let’s just hope that there is some great news coming when it comes to the ratings over the next few weeks.
