Shameless season 9 exec open to Cameron Monaghan return

Speaking in a new interview with TVLine after the actor’s departure, executive producer John Wells had the following to say when it comes to his own interest to get him back on the series:
“[He] knows that he is much beloved and welcome back any time … We certainly hope he wants to come back and do more [episodes]. [Cameron is] young and looking around at the world and wanting to know what to do next, and we have nothing but admiration and [are] proud of him. We watched him grow up and turn into a great young man.”
We do think that the door is open here, but we’d be shocked if Cameron comes back this year. For starters, Ian is in prison so unless someone visits him, there’s no real way to include him. Down the road, though, you can figure that there are some ways to bring him back … and you could get an update on Ian and Mickey in the process. Their relationship was sparked again in the final seconds of Cameron’s last appearance on the show, which was a way to bring that relationship full circle. Things were chaotic between the two of them for many years but by the end of it, we do think that they love each other and understand one another better than anyone else.
We also have to go ahead and prepare at the end of the season for the loss of someone else we love: Emmy Rossum’s Fiona, another main character and key part of the ensemble. It does remain to be seen just how the series is going to move forward without her.
