Who died on Modern Family season 10 episode 5?

On tonight’s new episode of Modern Family season 10, the ABC show formally killed off an important family member. This was something that was subject to a number of headlines before the season really even got going, with there being some speculation that a major series regular could end up kicking the bucket.

So what happened instead? Well, Modern Family did end up losing a major character — it just wasn’t the person many people thought. Instead, the character who departed was Shelley Long’s DeDe, and she did not actually appear on-screen for one final performance. Instead, the news about Jay’s ex passing away came courtesy of Jerry. The death happened off-screen and in the episode, Jay and most of the rest of the family had to deal with some of the aftermath of it.

Killing off characters on comedies is not the easiest thing in the world to do. This is a show with a particular tone and with that in mind, it can be rather hard to make it into something to laugh about. There were also a number of people who were close to DeDe, and there were some emotional moments tonight. Take, for example, some involving Claire. We do really appreciate, though, Modern Family as a show trying to tell some more stories that are reflective of real life.
