Shameless season 9: Should Justin Chatwin return?

Is there a chance that you could see Justin Chatwin make one last appearance as Jimmy a.k.a. Steve on Shameless before Emmy Rossum leaves at the end of season 9? We know that’s a burning question that many have out there, and it’s an understandable one. After all, this character is one of the most-important people who has been in Fiona’s life over time, and there’s a fan base out there for the two out there — just like there is a fan base out there for Mickey and Ian.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to be altogether easy to get answers on Jimmy/Steve at the moment. Speaking via THR, executive producer John Wells made it clear that he isn’t altogether willing to say anything about a Chatwin return for the time being:

I can say absolutely nothing about it, although you don’t want to perform same magic trick twice in one season.

Do we think that there could be an appearance from Chatwin even if it’s not identical to what we saw with Mickey? Sure, but it also feels like most of Fiona’s story has been about moving forward. If Jimmy/Steve would exist to bring her back to the past, we don’t exactly think that would be the right way to end her story. (She’s already been brought back to her past by returning to the Gallagher house.) However, if there’s a way this character can return in an evolved form that brings her closer to realizing/understanding her future, we do think that there could be an immense amount of story value there and we’re excited to see how that develops.

The hardest part of Shameless season 9 is going to be waiting for it to return; after all, the series is taking a hiatus from now until 2019, where it will be back on January 20.

In the end, we imagine that the exit of Fiona will be satisfying — it’s mostly a question of how it all comes together.
