Manifest season 1 lands three more episodes, 16-episode order overall
Today, NBC announced that they have picked up the Josh Dallas high-concept drama for three more episodes, which puts the overall order for the series at 16. That’s far from a bad episode count for the show, though at the same time it’s also significantly less than what we’re seeing from other fall series.

Yet, this may not necessarily be a bad thing. As an insider told TVLine on the subject, this seems to be a creative decision more so than anything impacted by the ratings for the series to date:
“Full-season orders of less than 22 episodes are quite common today. In fact, the first three seasons of NBC’s hit series This Is Us have been 18 episodes each … And The Good Place, which many regard as the best comedy on broadcast or cable, have been 13 episodes over its first three seasons… We want to run original episodes continuously in the first quarter of 2019 without any repeats, [and Manifest‘s] ambitious storytelling means taking the time to get it right in the writers’ room and in production.”
We’ve certainly seen with a number of series over time that less can be more, and sometimes having smaller seasons keeps out some of the filler. There are certainly some episodes of Lost that we like to think could’ve been cut if it had an opportunity to do fewer episodes a year, and this may also help to reduce burnout among the cast and crew in the process. 22 episodes is a lot these days, especially when you also think about the amount of time needed to film episodes, promote them, and try to make what little time you can for your family.
