Orange is the New Black ending at Netflix; season 7 to be final one

After helping to really be one of Netflix’s game-changing shows, the story of Orange is the New Black is finally set to come to a close.

In a statement today, the streaming service has confirmed that the final season of the series is going to be airing in 2019. Note that the show is being canceled; it feels as though this is something that has been in the works for a good while and the show may have even been renewed years ago through season 7 with this in mind. It’s a chance for Piper and the rest of the characters to have a proper ending — given that Piper is currently out of prison, it makes sense that the story start to wrap up a little bit.

Here is what show creator Jenji Kohan had to say about the decision:

“After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison. I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black.”

Meanwhile, Netflix’s own Vice President of Original Content Cindy Holland also added the following:

“During production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world. Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever … We will be sad to say goodbye but we will definitely be going out on a high. We are grateful to Jenji Kohan and her groundbreaking vision; to her supremely talented team of writers and producers; and to a once-in-a-lifetime cast and crew for creating a truly special work of art that has inspired conversations and connected audiences around the world.”

In the time that it has been on the air, Orange is the New Black has received a great deal of critical acclaim, and it may also go down in history as one of the most genre-busting series out there. Remember that this show flipped from comedy to drama at the Emmys, and seemingly also inspired a rule change about who could be considered a guest after Uzo Aduba started to dominate within that category.
