The Conners ratings down from Roseanne, still lead night; The Rookie OK

The Conners

Within this piece, we’ve got some of the first The Conners ratings of the season … and there’s certainly a lot to discuss with these.

As we discuss in the video below (be sure to subscribe for some more updates), ratings are very much relative sometimes. With The Conners, there are two different spins you can make after looking at the premiere rating of 2.3 in the 18-49 demographic. The first here is that this is an enormous drop from the ratings for Roseanne earlier this year, which had the support from Roseanne Barr fans and also nostalgia, being that it was coming on after a significant stretch of time away from television. Yet, you can also spin these ratings and say that it was still the #1 show of the night in the demo. Despite the drop, The Conners was still a hit.

Will it remain a hit now that the curiosity around the show is over? that’s the real question, since we’re anticipating a week-to-week drop of around 20% since this premiere was driven so much by some of the headlines. By week 3 or 4, we’ll get a really good chance to see what the actual audience for the show was.

While The Conners put a dent into series like The Flash and NCIS, there are two shows that we think deserve conversation right now more than any other.

The Rookie – The idea was that The Conners was going to kick off a big night of comedy for ABC and that many of the other shows would benefit from it generously. That didn’t happen, and that’s probably the disappointment here more than anything. There was no real trickle-in with lead-in viewers by the time The Rookie premiered and it started off with a 1.0 rating — that’s not terrible, given ABC’s history of terrible outings in this timeslot. Yet, if it falls significantly week-to-week we may be saying something different.

Lethal Weapon – Despite all of the turmoil and the headlines, this series is still somehow clinging on for dear life. With a 0.7 rating last night, it actually improved on its lead-in and retained the entirety of its demo audience from last week.
