When will This Is Us season 3 return to Jack, Nicky in Vietnam?

This Is Us season 2

As we come out of Tuesday night’s This Is Us episode, there are some other interesting questions to wonder regarding Vietnam. To be specific, think in terms of when we could return to this particular storyline.

Where we are at now is that Jack has reunited with his brother Nicky overseas, but has also realized in the process of it that the Nicky he is seeing is not the same iteration of the man who left. The war has changed him greatly, and it seems as though he’s also ready to die as a part of it. He’s someone who is contending now with his fate, and there’s always been a perceptive quality to things. He may not be the leader that his brother is, but he recognizes hardship and also can see where things are going. Jack likes to live in the moment; Nicky, meanwhile, often is thinking about what’s ahead.

In a new piece via Entertainment Weekly, we do learn that This Is Us is going to revisit Vietnam in a major way on episode 7. So what’s ahead in that hour? Actor Michael Angarano, who plays Nicky on the series, had the following to say:

You’ll start to understand pretty immediately how differently Jack and Nicky have handled the war, and the effect it’s had on Nicky. He’s been there for about a year; Jack has been there only for three to six months. You will see a lot of the dynamic that is already in this episode, of their sibling dynamic and the way they grew up and a little bit of Nicky’s resentment towards Jack. That scene at the mechanic shop, which is Nicky’s first scene — I thought it said so much because we’re so used to seeing Jack say, “I have a plan. I’m going to take care of this.” And Nicky’s calling him out on it, saying, “My own personal Superman, and I’m your Lois Lane.” He’s building Jack up but also seeing through him a little bit. Nicky has this way of seeing through situations. Jack is very earnest, very direct, simple in a lot of ways. And Nicky is hyper-intellectual and very analytical and observant. I think his brain and his heart are his own worst enemy.

Basically, we don’t think that things are going to end all that well between these two brothers, and the difference that Jack encounters with him could prove rather-startling to him in its own right. Jack is going to have to contend with the reality that this version of his brother is not the same. It’s a different skin and he is carrying with him a rather different energy. He’s not going to be able to handle him as he once did.
