Arrow season 7 premiere: About those new flash-forwards…

Arrow

Exiting tonight’s Arrow season 7 premiere, it is clear that this is a VERY different landscape for the show. All of a sudden, the series is about looking forward more so than looking back.

Remember the flashbacks that we got the first several seasons of the show? Well, we’re now getting flashforwards, and they are featuring an older version of William! Oliver’s son, more than twenty years in the future, heads back to Liam Yu. While there, he also just so happens to meet an older version of Roy. It’s a bold move and a big mystery for the series to play with — and it doesn’t seem as though the writers are drifting away from this anytime soon.

Speaking via Gamespot, executive producer Beth Schwartz had the following to say about the twist:

“We’re gonna keep [the flashforwards] all season and series … Part of what I think made this series so successful in having the flashbacks is that you were able to really get into your characters. Especially with Oliver, you knew how he became the way he is. And now with the flashforwards, you’re able to see what is happening in the present day, how that affects the characters in the future.”

It’s possible that we will see some other series regulars at some point in the future, but we imagine that the writers will be coy on giving you too many. After all, remember this: They may not want to confirm that everyone is still alive in this timeline. The longer you can keep characters’ fates a mystery, the more drama and intrigue you develop for the series as a whole.

As for whether or not we get these flashforwards in every episode, there’s a case to be made both for and against it. For now, we’re just excited that the series is taking some big risks and really looking towards having a legacy at this point in the show’s run.
