Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman highlighted

Last Week Tonight

The main segment on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on October 14 was a little bit different from many others, but also very much important. After all, Saudi Arabia was the focus, and this was incredibly timely given the recent death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Yet, this segment wasn’t just about that investigation. Instead, it had a great deal to do with Mohammed bin Salman, the country’s progressive new leader who has made some advances in the country including allowing women to drive and trying to move away from oil. Yet, at the same, Oliver pointed out a number of different issues with his policy, including some headlines that exist here underneath the surface.

Oliver also talked about the relationship Donald Trump has with Saudi Arabia, which goes back to his days as a businessman. It was also the first country he visited as President and he has held a number of press conferences with leaders and other government officials.

So what was the big message from this segment? That there’s so much more going on in this country that the President or even the media is fully portraying, given that there is still darkness underneath the surfaced beyond just what is happening with Khashoggi. Whether or not it ever gets the full attention merited remains to be seen, but this is absolutely a situation that needs to be watched over throughout the coming months. As for whether or not it will, there’s a good reason to have some doubt there given that we’re in a climate that, at this point, really doesn’t have the time or the space to focus on too much of anything. One huge news story breaks, it dominates the headlines for a few weeks, and then it’s on to the next one. Everything tends to be forgotten about in the world a little bit too fast.
