How a Lethal Weapon season 4 renewal could still happen

At the moment, there have been a number of different headlines out there about Lethal Weapon and the future — most notably, that the series has been picked up for an additional two episodes, which brings the total season 3 order to 15.

It’s pretty clear at this point that this show has endured a lot of chaos, including Damon Wayans proclaiming that he is going to quit. With that, it’s almost remarkable that the series got these two episodes at all.

So, is there really a chance at a season 4 in the midst of all this? On the surface, you can argue that it looks unlikely, especially since Lethal Weapon is one of the weaker-performing shows on Fox’s schedule and is surrounded by all of this drama. Yet, there are some other things to consider here. For starters, the DVR numbers to date have been very good for the series, and the franchise does still continue to have international name value. Also, many viewers have responded well to Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole. He’s not Martin Riggs, but that is kind of the intention. They don’t want to create another Riggs since that sets up the new character to fail.

If there is a path for a season 4, it’s this: Keep the live ratings steady, convince Damon Wayans to come back happy for a fourth season, and also manage to have the same DVR strength that you have right now. These two episodes added to the order could just be a nice way to wrap up the story, but they could also be more dependent on what the writers ultimately decide to do. They could try to balance between closure and a small cliffhanger for the future.
