Criminal Minds season 14 episode 5 spoilers: ‘The Tall Man’ on Halloween

Criminal Minds season 14 episode 5 appears to be intent on creeping you out as much as humanly possible. After all, it is airing on Halloween night, it is directed by Matthew Gray Gubler, and the title is “The Tall Man.” If that doesn’t remind you of Slender Man on some level, what will?

There are some clear similarities here between the two, as evidenced in the Criminal Minds season 14 episode 5 synopsis that CarterMatt has below:

“The Tall Man” – The BAU investigates a spooky local ghost story of the “Tall Man” and the clues it provides when two people go missing in the woods of East Allegheny’s Dead Man’s Conservatory, and a third mysteriously surfaces the following day with limited details as to what happened to her friends. To assist with the case, JJ reluctantly returns to her hometown, triggering emotional flashbacks to age 11 and her older sister’s tragic death, on CRIMINAL MINDS, Wednesday, Oct. 31 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Series star Matthew Gray Gubler directed the episode.

The most appealing thing about this episode is, of course, getting a super-creepy case on Halloween night. This is what a show like Criminal Minds can execute that very few others can. It is legitimately scary at times; it really comes down to being a show about people responsible for making some of the nightmares go away.

Beyond the creep factor, it is also best to not overlook the personal JJ storyline, which does continue a trend that Criminal Minds is doing this season of offering stories about each main character to go along with the case of the week. It’s something that we really do wish that this show had been doing for many years since it is always nice to get that sort of additional perspective on people and where they stand, especially when the series is facing an uncertain future.
