Sunday night marks the premiere of Supergirl season 4, and it feels clear going into it that Nicole Maines is one of the biggest x-factors. She is a newcomer on the series, and she is playing an important character. As Nia Nal, she is someone who Kara Danvers can take under her wing and inspire her to be a better reporter. Meanwhile, down the road she is going to become Dreamer, and it’s possible that Supergirl could end up becoming some sort of mentor for her in that role.
While the new video below via Ellen doesn’t necessarily give you a whole lot of new information when it comes to Maines’ Supergirl role that we don’t know about already, it does allow you a chance to get some more information about her background, being transgender, and also the journey that eventually led to her being on this show. Maines is still a relatively new actor, with her most notable credit being an episode of Royal Pains. She is still learning, but aren’t all actors in some way? The great thing about her on this show is that she can learn in a great environment surrounded by a number of other supportive and smart people.
We do think that the writers are going to take their time with the Dreamer part of Nia’s story, mostly because there is no real hurry to go in that direction. For the time being, the primary order of business here is just doing whatever they can to establish Nia, and really also establish the world of CatCo as a whole. The Kara part of Supergirl got a little bit buried at the end of season 3 in the midst of everything that was going on with Supergirl and Reign. We get it, but it is nice to see a shift back the other way.
