Saturday Night Live cold open: Susan Collins, GOP locker room talk Brett Kavanaugh

Saturday Night Live

What was this week’s Saturday Night Live cold open like? Well, let’s just say that this one had a lot to follow up to in terms of headlines. Last week marked the debut of Matt Damon as Brett Kavanaugh, but after that first appearance, we weren’t quite sure that there was any more reason in which to see him again.

So where did we go this time around? Well, tonight was about Kavanaugh again, but this time we started off with Kenan Thompson as Don Lemon, who brought us a segment featuring Dana Bash (Heidi Gardner) from the GOP locker room, celebrating the big “win.” The comedy here came mostly out of seeing Kate McKinnon as Lindsey Graham — though we also saw Cecily Strong as Susan Collins.

Was all of this funny? There were a few good jokes in here, including seeing “Collins” claim she was getting ready to lose her Senate seat and also some very good spoofing of Chuck Schumer from the other side, as well. We give the writers credit for prepping this knowing that the vote was no certainty going into the show tonight. Our feeling is that if the results were different, they could have just flipped the sketch and done the Democratic Party locker room instead.

It is interesting, though, that we are two shows into the new season and there is no sighting of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. We knew that he was planning to cut back on some of his appearances this year, but it did still catch us off guard to a certain degree.
