Last Man Standing season 7 episode 2 video: Bud’s death; Mike’s coping process

Last Man Standing

Even back before Last Man Standing season 7 started filming, the news came out that the writers were killing off Bud. Mike’s father had a larger presence through the first handful of seasons on the show, but this move was made as a way to inject the reality of death into this universe.

Is it true that Last Man Standing is meant to be a fun, lighthearted family comedy? Certainly, but it’s also about a group of people trying their best to work through difficult issues in their lives. For Mike Baxter, there are few issues more important than processing what happened to his dad. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Tim Allen’s character really wants to.

In the new sneak peek below (via TVLine) for Friday night’s new episode, you can see Mike engaged in a conversation with Vanessa over grief. Mike has not processed losing his father much since it apparently happened at a bowling alley, and it is also clear that the two were not necessarily all that close. The characters had different outlooks on the world, and we don’t think that Mike ever took pleasure in his dad owning a store entitled Bud’s Buds. Yet, he was still his father and it’s our belief that this is a message the writers will get across here. People are important, regardless of their beliefs or the differences you had along the way. Bud was far from perfect, but there are some other important conversations that Mike still needs to have. This is why Robert Forster is appearing for at least one more episode — to deliver an element of closure, as he will show up beyond the grave for his son.

Do you remember how sitcoms used to promote emotional episodes by calling them “special” in advance? This seems to fit the bill.
