Damon Wayans’ Lethal Weapon exit reportedly blindsided cast, crew

Lethal Weapon season 2 promo

Earlier today, Damon Wayans shocked most of the entertainment world by announcing that later this year, he’s done with Lethal Weapon.

At the moment (and as reported earlier), the Fox series currently has a 13-episode order for the third season. According to a report from Deadline, there were some discussions about extended that order to 15. While the ratings to date are down from the season 2 average, Tuesday’s average kept the entirety of the average demo audience in the 18-49 demographic. Some viewers have taken well to Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole, though others remain angry over the firing of Clayne Crawford (who played Martin Riggs).

So how does the cast and crew feel about Wayans’ announced departure? Apparently, they are still trying to figure that out, as well. Damon broke the news today to Electronic Urban Report, who were on set for his co-star Keesha Sharp’s directorial debut. Wayans rarely does interviews for the show, but decided to do one with the outlet. This is when he blindsided the rest of the team, who had no idea this was coming.

Now, the studio and Fox are left to scramble. If we had to guess, they’ll be doing what they can to speak with Wayans and see if there is a way to change his mind. He works long hours on the show, and that is just one of the problems that he is dealing with; he is also diabetic, and he told EUR that he has been dealing with some other personal issues that have made his work all the more difficult. In his words, he has a hard time playing this particular character with some of what he’s dealing with outside of the job.

Do we wonder why Fox renewed the show given some of the previous reports about Wayans’ happiness on the show? Sure, but we’re also not an executive.
