Damon Wayans leaving Lethal Weapon, role of Roger Murtaugh

Lethal Weapon season 3

It looks as though Lethal Weapon is going to be down yet another lead as we move into the future.

Speaking in a new interview with Electronic Urban Report, Damon Wayans confirmed that at the end of the 13th episode that is being filmed for the Fox season this year, he is going to be making his exit. He wants to give the series time to find a replacement — of course, if there is a replacement to be found. The ratings for season 3 to date have been steady, but also far from great. To date, the show is averaging a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This is down versus much of season 2, though even with some of the later episodes in the spring.

What we do find ourselves wondering the most at the moment is simply this: Whether or not it means the end of the road when it comes to Lethal Weapon itself. Do we have to prepare ourselves for a cancellation now? The series already lost Clayne Crawford in a controversial fashion, and they can’t exactly bring back Martin Riggs now after his death. It’s hard to imagine this series working without Riggs or Murtaugh, and it helps to raise the question as to why the show was renewed for a season 3 in the first place. That is especially the case when you consider the reports that Wayans was never particularly thrilled with some of the long hours and rigor of this job in the first place. (Damon tells the publication that being 58 and a diabetic, he has a hard time dealing with the 16-hour work days and wants to return to doing other things.)
