This Is Us season 3 episode 2 review: What’s happening with Toby?
For Kate, her story tonight was every bit about her mother as it was about her. After Jack’s death, her eating started to get out of control and Rebecca was not able to do a lot in order to curtail it. One of the biggest reasons for that was simply due to her being barely able to get out of bed, let alone look after everyone else. This also caused Kevin to start to battle alcoholism, something that has obviously plagued him a little more recently in life.

The good news for Kate is that her relationship with her mother is on a little bit of steadier ground, and we had a good example of that tonight as we saw the two characters look after each other. When Toby showed up late for Kevin’s movie premiere, Rebecca helped give Kate her IVF treatment giving them something more to bond over.
Randall also turned up at the movie premiere following a busy day back at the apartment building, one where he realized that even though he was William’s son, he didn’t understand William’s experience. He wants to be there for people who could need him, but he doesn’t know how to make that happen. This is why we could be seeing him consider a political run in the future — it’s something that he could use to help the largest total number of people, and that is something we’re convinced that he wants to do. Randall has longed show a propensity to want to care for others; that’s something that he showed all the way back when he decided not to go to Howard so that he could remain a little bit closer to his family, who he felt really needed him.
While all of this is interesting, the big mystery at the moment has to remain Toby, who is clearly struggling and we know that eventually, will start to go more off the rails due to his depression and issues that stem from that. We’re already seeing some imbalance from him, especially when he lashed out at Kate’s family for telling her what she should and shouldn’t do while trying to have a baby … and we have a feeling that this is only the beginning.
CarterMatt Verdict
What This Is Us season 3 episode 2 brought us primarily were some reminders that in the Pearson family, stability is a loosely-defined word. Also, characters are trying to better themselves, but in the process of doing so, they may also need to prepare for a wide array of consequences.
